Intersex Awareness Day: visibility begins with listening

I want A GAY Mafia to make space for people whose lives are too often reduced to a letter in an acronym. On 26 October, Intersex Awareness Day offers a reason to pause, listen and learn.

DIVA’s explainer traces the date to a 1996 demonstration in Boston. Thirty years later, the questions of bodily autonomy, dignity and who gets to speak about intersex lives remain essential.

For a European perspective, I would begin with OII Europe, the umbrella organisation of intersex-led human rights organisations. Its resources include first-person testimonies, guidance for allies and families, and a Good Practice Map documenting positive developments across Europe. These are different ways into the subject, depending on what a reader needs.

The distinction matters: intersex refers to variations in sex characteristics; it should not be treated as a synonym for a sexual orientation. Nor should visibility become an excuse to speculate about somebody’s body or medical history.

My editorial starting point is simple. People should be able to tell their own stories, on their own terms. Today, I’m pointing readers towards voices and organisations already doing that work, with the hope that our attention lasts longer than one awareness day.
