'Maxxing' is Dictionary.com's Word of the Year: a field guide for the rest of us
The slang suffix for going all-in on something beat "affordability", "data center", "odyssey" and "unc". It started in gaming and grew up in some of the internet's grimmer corners. This weekend it has a more cheerful use: Halloween.

Dictionary.com has named "maxxing" its Word of the Year for 2026. It defines the word as "the practice of pursuing an activity to the fullest or optimizing a certain aspect of your life" (Dictionary.com). The announcement, dated 25 October, says searches for "maxxing" as a standalone word rose sharply over the past year and have not dropped off in 2026. Searches for "looksmaxxing" jumped early this year after media coverage. The runners-up were "affordability", "data center", "odyssey" (credited to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey) and "unc", a clipping of "uncle" that younger users now throw at anyone uncool (Dictionary.com). Queer media got there quickly: PinkNews urged readers to get "vocab-maxxing".
Where the word comes from
The pedigree is not glamorous. Dictionary.com traces "maxxing" to "maxing out" and to the gamer term "min-maxing", which means building a character so its strengths cancel out its weaknesses. It spread through Reddit and other forums before reaching TikTok. "Looksmaxxing" appears in archived data from 2015, and Dictionary.com notes that the early communities were largely young men, some of them in the manosphere (Dictionary.com; Dictionary.com slang guide). Merriam-Webster added "looksmaxxing" to its dictionary in September, among 1,400 new entries (Fox Business).
The word has since drifted far from those forums. Dictionary.com's own list includes "sleepmaxxing", "proteinmaxxing", "cozymaxxing", "booksmaxxing", "nonnamaxxing" and "salmonmaxxing" (Dictionary.com). Its slang guide adds "personalitymaxxing", becoming as likeable as possible, and warns that overuse may have blurred the meaning (Dictionary.com).
A modest proposal for the weekend
These are our suggestions, not dictionary entries.
Costumemaxxing: Halloween falls on Saturday. Committing to the bit outranks spending money.
Tea-dance-maxxing: a Sunday-afternoon party is the most efficient way to see friends, hear disco and still go to bed at a reasonable hour.
Sleepmaxxing: this one is official. It is also the only sensible plan for Monday after an afterhours.
Personalitymaxxing: on a dancefloor, good manners at the bar beat abs.
One branch we would happily retire is looksmaxxing at all costs: the word's own history runs through forums that turned appearance into a ranking system, and nobody needs that on a dancefloor. Maxx the fun and leave your body as it is.
