EUROPE’S LGBTQ+ RIGHTS DIVIDE: WHAT I CARRY BEYOND THE DANCEFLOOR

When I look at Europe through its queer nightlife, it is tempting to see a continent connected by music and weekend journeys. ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map 2026 asks me to look at what changes when we cross a border.
The map compares LGBTI laws and policies across 49 countries using 76 criteria. Spain leads at 89%, followed by Malta at 88% and Iceland at 86%. Italy scores 24%; the European average is 43%. Those differences deserve attention alongside our travel plans.
This is a legal and policy benchmark, not a rating of individual people, a measure of every lived experience, or a personal travel-safety guarantee. A high score cannot tell us that everyone feels protected. A low one cannot erase the courage and care of local queer communities.
For me, loving our nightlife also means caring about the lives around it: recognition, family, bodily autonomy and the freedom to organise. I want this page to celebrate where we gather while remaining curious about who still struggles to feel free.
